Naming our Church

We are still on a quest to choose a name for our church! Here are the top suggestions that we came up with Sunday afternoon. We may end up with one of these names, or we may find some more inspiration. If you have any other ideas, please post them!

Riverside Community Church

Washburne Community Church

Peace (or La Paz) Community Church

The Way

The Neighborhood Church

Other ideas included: Element Community Church, Open Arms, Open Doors, The Well, Border Crossing Community Church, Namaste, Manna, Mercy, Trinity, and Trillium.

  1. Just to make it more fun, I’m going to throw another one out there. So I was sifting through my Firefox bookmarks (because I live and die by my bookmarks, you know) and I rediscovered an artsy church or community or something called Mosaic. Mosaic Community Church?

  2. Mosaic is a really cool name. It is a bit used, as there are several Mosaics, including one as close as Portland. However, it is a viable name and I think it hits on a part of what we’re hoping our community will be. That’s my piece of shiny glass added to this mosaic of conversation. :)

  3. Mustard Seed Community Church? Seeds Community Church? Um um um umm what are some other things that are mixes of a bunch of random stuff? Collage? too close to college. Junk Drawer Community Church? Trail Mix Community Church? Frankenstein Community Church? Grandma’s Cottage Bean Soup Church? We could always jump on the Kesey bus and call it Further Community Church ;)

  4. I like the way you are thinking a lot. Further Community Church :)

I had a thought… what about something with “view” in it, like Neighborhood View Church? Less creepy than “vision” but alludes to seeing.

I also like Mosaic, but it’s getting over used.

A cool woman I met at Convergence last year is just starting up a church that they are calling House for All Sinners and Saints. House for All, for short. I think that’s pretty cool, but now it’s taken too. :)

  5. More storms of the brain:
Jigsaw Community Church (we’re all pieces, but we need each other for the big picture)
Droplet Community Church (like Herb’s image)
Plowshares Community Church (the transformative and cultivating nature of our community, “He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore. “)

I would say we should just bag it and call ourselves the Nameless Church, but I think there’s some garbage eating cult connected with that.

  6. Nameless is also the name of the hero assassin in Hero. very interesting movie.

Josh had the suggestion this afternoon of Missio Dei (Mission of God).

Droplet… hmmm. I really would like to capture the beauty of that image somewhere.

Great storming of the brain Hannah!

  7. In Judaism there’s the idea/practice of Tikkun Olam (repair the world) which I thought of when Josh was talking about how can we really rest when the world isn’t in its right state, but I’m sure the Jewish community around here would be pretty offended if we used that.

  8. Ideas that popped up during Convergence.

    The Edge Community Church
    The Ledge Community Church
Converge (a community of individuals coming together, and Flannery O’Connor does say that everything that rises must converge…)
Castaway Community Church (that rejected stone idea)
